General Questions
Who, or what, inspired you to play?
my local (Greenhills) used to run a pool tourney every Sunday night, it was always a doubles tourney due to the number of entrants. This was back in the days when the pub didn’t open till 6.30 on a Sunday. More often than not I was paired up with Frank McLaughin who taught me how to play and not just pot balls.
Favourite EK team you have played in?
The Greenhills
Favourite EK team you haven’t played in?
Either Club 2000 for the company, or the Tower for the very same, both teams always make you feel more than welcome.
Best player you have ever played against?
Colin Philip in EK or Mikey Marshall in Dunoon. Colin because I never beat him and Mikey cause he beat me in that first Dunoon final.
Best player you have played alongside?
Had a few in the Greenhills, so if you will allow me to mention some of them. Jim McKenna for his potting, Marty Thom for his consistency, and Gerry O’Connell for his ability to win when all others would have given up. But if you could somehow take all of the above and blend it into one, then you would have Davie Pew. He was the best player I have played with, there have been a few others who graced our team all too fleetingly, but the 4 guys mentioned have played at least 3 or 4 years with us.
Favourite pro players (Pool or Snooker):
- Alex Higgins
- John Higgins
- Earl Strickland
Who is your bogey player?
Colin Philip in the league and Bob Taylor in the pub as he keeps knocking me out of tourneys in the ‘hills.
What’s the one match that sticks in your memory
My first singles final in Dunoon. It was first to seven and I was five one up and on the black when a fight broke out and then the match was cancelled! The committee ordered it to be played again in another venue with a best of 3, and I lost two one (and some of you think our committee are idiots!).
What’s would you say your best pool attribute is?
My patience.
How would you rate the current standard of pool in EK?
Fairly decent, although I still think that we should be doing better at Super League events.
What do you think we could do to raise the standard?
I think it’s an individual thing here, and one of the best ways is to enter events or to play against better players on a regular basis.
